This week, employees of the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan — Leonid Kim (Laboratory of Arachnology and Other Invertebrates) and Gulzhanat Tanabekova (Academic Secretary of the Institute) — visited High Tech Academy, a private innovative school in Almaty, to evaluate scientific projects by 11th-grade students.
The students presented about ten research projects addressing a pressing ecological issue — desertification. The projects included ideas for water filtration, soil remediation, and soil enrichment using plants, microorganisms, and animals such as California worms. Each team demonstrated a well-formulated hypothesis, a research plan, and preliminary findings, leaving the experts greatly impressed.
“We listened to their ideas with great interest, which, by the way, can truly contribute to solving ecological challenges,” said Leonid Kim. “This school does everything to unlock the potential of its students, and we are delighted to see them succeed in the natural sciences.”
High Tech Academy is renowned for its emphasis on project-based learning, where students tackle real-world problems and develop innovative solutions. The team from the Institute of Zoology served as invited experts, evaluating presentations and advising the students. The final results of the projects are expected by the end of the academic year.
We wish the young researchers success and look forward to meeting them again during the final presentation of their achievements!
