World Wildlife Day – 2025

March 3 is celebrated as World Wildlife Day—an occasion to remind everyone of the richness of our plant and animal worlds and the importance of preserving them. Currently, more than 46,300 species of plants and animals are endangered.

This day serves as a reminder of the need to step up efforts to combat wildlife crimes and curb the decline in species populations caused by human activities, which has far-reaching economic, environmental, and social consequences.

Kazakhstan is home to many rare and endangered species, including the snow leopard, saiga, red-breasted goose, Tien Shan shrew, and many other animals in need of protection. Thanks to the efforts of nature reserves, national parks, and scientific organizations throughout the country, ongoing monitoring, protection, and restoration of populations is taking place.

The Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan plays an active role in biodiversity research and nature conservation. A key step in these efforts was the update of Kazakhstan’s Red Book, which incorporates modern data on the numbers and status of rare species.

The fifth update of the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan includes 217 species and subspecies of wild animals from Kazakhstan’s fauna:

  • Oligochaete annelids – 2 species
  • Gastropod mollusks – 4 species
  • Crustaceans – 1 species
  • Arachnids – 4 species
  • Insects – 71 species
  • Lampreys – 1 species
  • Ray-finned fishes – 16 species
  • Amphibians – 3 species
  • Reptiles – 11 species
  • Birds – 59 species
  • Mammals – 45 species and subspecies

Satellite monitoring, camera traps, and molecular studies all help us better understand the processes taking place in the wild and develop measures for its conservation.

This day also encourages us to reflect on how each of us can help protect the environment. Practicing care toward nature, adopting responsible behavior, and supporting scientific and environmental initiatives will all contribute to safeguarding wildlife for future generations.

Value nature’s beauty, protect it, and remember that its future is in our hands!
