On March 23, 2025, at the age of 80, our colleague – Candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Education and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Honored Worker of Science and Education, Birlikbay Eshzhanovich Eshzhanov, passed away.
Warm spring weather has finally arrived in the vicinity of Almaty, and the staff of the Paleozoology Laboratory at the Institute of Zoology wasted no time organizing their first field excursion. After a long winter, we’d been missing excavation work!

The grant topic “Distribution and Phylogeny of the Genus Turcomilax in the Northern and Western Tien Shan” largely overlaps with Anel’s doctoral dissertation research.
On February 20, 2025, at the Institute of Botany and Phytointroduction located in the Almaty Botanical Garden, a meeting titled “Biodiversity of Kazakhstan 2025” was held. The event brought together biologists, zoologists, botanists, ecologists, and amateur naturalists who conduct photographic observations of wildlife.

The solemn ceremony for presenting the Academician Naylya Bazanova Awards to women researchers took place at the Gylym Ordasy building, at an event celebrating International Women’s Day. The awards were presented by Akhylbek Kazhigulovich Kurishbayev, President of the Board of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
March 3 is celebrated as World Wildlife Day—an occasion to remind everyone of the richness of our plant and animal worlds and the importance of preserving them. Currently, more than 46,300 species of plants and animals are endangered.
Today marks the 70th birthday of Yelena Sergeevna Chalikova, a well-known Kazakhstani ornithologist, Candidate of Biological Sciences, and Senior Researcher in the Laboratory of Ornithology and Herpetology at the Institute of Zoology.
