You’ve probably already heard the news that a snow leopard appeared in the Almaty Zoo, which was brought injured and weakened from the outskirts of the village of Sarybastau on April 20, 2023.
The Institute of Zoology of KN MNVO RK, from the first days of the appearance of the snow leopard in the zoo, monitors his condition. Our staff together with veterinarians of the Almaty Zoological Park, with the participation of representatives of the international foundation “Snow Leopard Foundation” and the Almaty Regional Territorial Inspection of Forestry and Wildlife” KCLHZM MEPR RK, conducted a comprehensive survey of the snow leopard. Specifically: behavioral characteristics and reactions of the animal were studied, body measurements and weighing were carried out, tests and samples for genetic and cryobiological studies were taken.
At present the predator is in a satisfactory condition and is on the mend. The decision to return the snow leopard to its natural habitat will be made based on the results of scientific research and an opinion on the state of the animal’s health.
