Following the results of the конкурс, Aidyn Baurzhanovich Eszhanov, PhD, Head of the Laboratory of Arachnology and Other Invertebrates, member of the Academic Council of the Institute, and head of program-targeted funding, has been elected Director General of the RSE “Institute of Zoology” of the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On June 23, a ceremony for awarding state honors to citizens who made a significant contribution to environmental protection and the implementation of the international project to restore the tiger to its historical range was held in Astana.

A working meeting with Hungarian scientist Dr. Gábor Sramkó, Associate Professor at the Department of Botany of the University of Debrecen, was held at the Institute of Zoology. The researcher is well known in the scientific community for his work in the field of phylogenetics and the evolution of steppe ecosystems.

A round table titled “Living Planet: Biodiversity Conservation as the Foundation of a Sustainable Future” was held at the library of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The event was dedicated to World Environment Day. The round table was organized by the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development and the Central Asian-German Institute for the Protection of Ecosystems and Biodiversity of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management.

The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan presented a high state award to Alexey Alexandrovich Grachev.

On June 4, 2026, the Institute of Zoology of the Committee of Science of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan hosted a round table titled “Modern methods of ungulate population assessment in forest zones using camera traps”, dedicated to contemporary approaches to monitoring and estimating the abundance of wild animals using digital technologies.

Staff members of the Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecotoxicology of the Institute of Zoology – Head of the Laboratory, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor E.G. Krupa, and Junior Researcher A.N. Kenzheeva – carried out a working trip from May 13 to 21, 2026 within the framework of the scientific and technical program BR24993060 “Development of an information system for maintaining the cadastre of wild animals of the Western Tien Shan”.

From April 20 to May 29, researchers of the Entomology Laboratory of the Institute of Zoology conducted a scientific expedition in the Western Tien Shan. The studies covered three protected areas: the “Merke” Regional Nature Park, the Karatau State Nature Reserve, and the Aksu-Zhabagly State Nature Reserve.

Professor Perizat Abdykairovna Yesenbekova, Chief Researcher of the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, conducted seminars for the staff of the science departments of the “Merke” regional nature park and the Aksu-Zhabagly State Nature Reserve.

From 19 to 21 May 2026, the international regional meeting “BESPIN Regional Trialogue for Europe and Central Asia. Coordinated Uptake of Biodiversity and Climate Knowledge for Transformative Action” was held in Skopje, North Macedonia. The event brought together representatives of the scientific community, public authorities, international organizations, and experts in the fields of biodiversity, climate change, and sustainable development.
