Luminaries of Kazakhstani science: the 120th anniversary of Academician Sergey Nikolaevich Boev

A round table titled “Luminaries of Kazakh Science: 120th Anniversary of Academician Sergey Nikolaevich Boev” was held at the Institute of Zoology, timed to coincide with Science Workers’ Day in Kazakhstan.

Sergey Nikolaevich Boev (1905–1987) was a student of Academician Skryabin, Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, Professor, helminthologist, Academician of the Kazakh SSR Academy of Sciences, Honored Worker of Science, laureate of the K.I. Skryabin Prize, and included in Kazakhstan’s Golden Book of Honor.

The opening address was delivered by Marina Alexandrovna Chirikova, Acting Director General of the Institute.

Researchers from the Parasitology Laboratory presented reports:

Nurgul Madalievna Jusupbekova, Acting Head of the Laboratory, introduced the audience to Boev’s biography, his research, scientific merits, achievements, and contributions to helminthology. Archival photographs that attracted attention were used in her presentation. Sergey Nikolaevich was not only an outstanding scientist but also devoted great attention to training young specialists and involving youth in science. Under his supervision, more than 25 PhD and 6 doctoral theses were completed and defended.

Laura Orazakynovna Zhantelieva, PhD, spoke about the current state of the Parasitology Laboratory, its main research directions, achievements, and future prospects.

Guest speaker Nail Abdrakhmanovich Gubaidullin, a parasitologist who once completed postgraduate studies at the Institute and served in various roles including Deputy Director for Science, shared his memories of Boev. He first met Boev 65 years ago when he was a young scientist joining the Institute. We are delighted that despite his venerable age (he will turn 90 next year), he could attend and share his recollections.

Senior Institute staff Piruzha Ablayevna Tleuberdina and Maratbek Zhaksibekovich Suleimenov also spoke.

Such meetings are very valuable, especially for young scientists, as they help preserve the Institute’s history and continuity, and remember the pioneers of zoological science in Kazakhstan.
