The Scientific Secretary of the Institute of Zoology, G.B. Tanabekova, delivered a presentation entitled “Insect pests of the Sievers apple tree in the Ile and Zhetysu Alatau”.

Scientific significance of the study lies in the fact that over the past 20 years one of the main threats to the survival of wild populations of the Sievers apple tree has been the local complex of insect pests. One of the key conditions for plant protection is the timely implementation of protective measures. Therefore, the study of the current species composition, ecological and biological characteristics of dominant and potential insect pests of the Sievers apple tree is an urgent research task of great practical importance.

Participants of the round table exchanged views and discussed issues related to the conservation of the Sievers apple tree, possible risks and threats, necessary protection measures, and prospects for further use of its potential.

The festival “Sievers apple tree blooming festival” has been held since 2018 on the territory of the Zhongar-Alatau State National Nature Park. According to scientists, about 48% of the world’s natural resources of the Sievers apple tree are concentrated in the Zhetysu Region, where the largest wild apple groves—the ancestors of all cultivated apple varieties on Earth—are located.
