In autumn 2025 the Chokpak ornithological station, which serves as the field base of the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, is ready to host volunteers to conduct bird counts at Shakpak Pass.
Shakpak Pass is one of the most important migration corridors in Central Asia, especially for raptors. It was here that large-scale monitoring and bird ringing began in the second half of the 20th century.

The main aim of the volunteering is to assist researchers with daily visual bird counts. This will allow comparison of current data with historical records and assessment of changes in timing, intensity and species composition of migrants. Participants will also be able to take part in bird ringing and record insect activity.
Not only ornithologists but also students, birdwatchers, naturalists and volunteers aged 18 and over are invited to participate.
Participants will gain unique field experience, including training and hands-on practice in bird counting and ringing.
Dates: 1 September – 31 October 2025 (shifts of 7–10 days) by prior arrangement with the ornithological station administration.
Location: Kazakhstan, Zhambyl region, Shakpak Pass
Accommodation (tents) and food are provided by the Chokpak ornithological station; travel costs must be covered by volunteers themselves!
