A round table titled “Living Planet: Biodiversity Conservation as the Foundation of a Sustainable Future” was held at the library of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The event was dedicated to World Environment Day. The round table was organized by the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development and the Central Asian-German Institute for the Protection of Ecosystems and Biodiversity of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management.

The event was attended by students, researchers, ecologists, and representatives of scientific organizations and environmental institutions of Kazakhstan. Participants discussed issues of biodiversity conservation, protection of rare species of plants and animals, modern environmental challenges, and pathways toward sustainable development.
Gulzhanat Tanabekova, Scientific Secretary of the Institute of Zoology and Senior Researcher of the Laboratory of Entomology, delivered a presentation titled “Sievers Apple: Research and Results.” In her talk, she presented the results of studies on one of the most important natural symbols of Kazakhstan—the wild Sievers apple, which is the ancestor of most modern cultivated apple varieties.
Third-year students of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University majoring in Biology, who were undertaking internships at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, participated in the round table as attendees. The event served as a platform for exchanging experience, discussing current environmental issues, and strengthening cooperation between the scientific community and the public.
